 Welcome to The Hedgestead!

This blog is run by the Hedgewife, December. Its where I share recipes, crafts, remedies, and the goings on of my small homestead in the Cumberland hills of Tennessee.

We bought our home and 2.75 acres in a small town, pop. 900, in fall of 2020. Before that, we lived in Tennessee and Alaska. My partner, Damon, learned how to garden, raise animals, fish, hunt, beekeeping, and more from family growing up. I learned folk herbalism from many teachers, including the school of experience, and later learned about gardening, canning, chickens, and more from my in-laws and other mentors.

We have a son who we homeschool, 2 rescue dogs, and a pet snake. Our house is very full but well loved.

Why Hedges?

Hedges are where life flourishes. There is more diversity of plants and animals in hedges than in fields or forest. Its a place on the edge, a liminal space where anything can happen. It is also a place of moderation - a little wild, a little domestic. Its a compromise in life and an adventure. This is the energy we wish to bring to our homestead.
